☕ Quick Take:
An independent schoolteacher and an arrogant duke join forces in this sizzling, mysterious historical romance.
📖 Plot Overview:
Phoebe Atkinson defies societal norms as a bluestocking schoolteacher living in a leaky flat far from her wealthy parents’ mansion. But when one of her students goes missing, she turns to the last person she’d want to ask for help—the powerful Duke of Ellis, William Margrave, her sister’s best friend and the man who once spurned her.
William, a reluctant duke, is determined to marry the perfect duchess and uphold his new title’s responsibilities. Yet, he finds himself drawn back to Phoebe, the unconventional woman who challenges everything he thought he wanted. Together, they unravel the mystery of Phoebe’s missing student while grappling with old feelings and undeniable attraction.
💭 My Thoughts:
Duchess Material is a delightful mix of romance and intrigue. I loved the dynamic between Phoebe and William, especially the layers of history and unrequited feelings that added depth to their interactions. The slow-burn tension was beautifully done, keeping me rooting for them throughout the story.
The mystery surrounding Phoebe’s missing student added a compelling thread, keeping me engaged until the very end. I also appreciated the portrayal of strong, independent women like Phoebe and her sisters, which felt true to the changing tides of the historical period. It was a refreshing departure from my usual romantasy reads!
That said, the ending felt slightly off for me. The attempt at a cliffhanger didn’t quite land, and the introduction of “The Nun” as the big villain felt a bit underwhelming. However, the strong characters and engaging storyline still make me excited for what’s to come, especially with hints of a series in the works.
🌙 Standout Moments:
The chemistry between William and Phoebe was electric, especially as they worked through their past and embraced their undeniable connection. I also loved Phoebe’s determination and how her unconventional choices made her stand out in a rigid society.
🌱 Who Should Read This?
Fans of Netflix's Bridgerton series or historical romances featuring strong, independent heroines and dashing, brooding dukes will adore Duchess Material. It’s perfect for readers who enjoy a blend of mystery, romance, and period drama.
📚 Final Thoughts:
Duchess Material is an engaging historical romance with memorable characters, an intriguing mystery, and plenty of sizzling tension. While the ending didn’t fully land for me, it’s still a delightful read, and I’m eagerly anticipating the next book in the series!
