Shannon Lee and Fonda Lee's Breath of the Dragon: Breathmarked is a mesmerizing YA fantasy that pays homage to Bruce Lee’s legacy while crafting a thrilling, emotional, and action-packed narrative. As someone who grew up watching martial arts films with my family, I was immediately intrigued by the concept of a story inspired by Bruce Lee’s teachings and crafted by his daughter. My expectations were high, but this book exceeded them in every way.
Jun’s journey is deeply compelling. His determination to prove himself despite not being breathmarked made him an underdog you can’t help but root for. His resilience and raw skill stand out as he faces the obstacles of the Guardian’s Tournament while grappling with the scars of his family’s past. I especially appreciated how the story showcased themes of honor, identity, and perseverance, woven seamlessly into an exhilarating fantasy backdrop.
The nods to Bruce Lee’s philosophies, like the One-Inch Punch, were delightful for fans familiar with his legacy, but the story remains approachable for those new to it. The world-building is rich, the characters are vibrant, and the action sequences are electrifying. The dynamic between Jun and Ren added depth and heart, while the stakes of the tournament kept me on the edge of my seat.
This book captivated me from start to finish, and I am already eagerly awaiting the conclusion of this duology. Breath of the Dragon: Breathmarked is an absolute must-read for fans of martial arts, epic fantasies, and emotionally resonant stories.
