Rebecca Yarros’ Onyx Storm brings readers back to the high-stakes world of The Empyrean series, delivering nonstop action, shocking twists, and deeper lore that will keep fans on the edge of their seats. As Violet Sorrengail faces her most dangerous mission yet, the stakes have never been higher—for her dragons, her home, and the truth that could change everything.

Returning to Basgiath War College felt like coming home. I truly forgot how much I enjoyed this world, and it was great to be immersed in it again. However, there were a few aspects that didn’t fully work for me. The beginning felt confusing, as I struggled to remember minor characters introduced in previous books. A quick refresher would have helped reorient me.

Another aspect that wore thin was the repetition in Violet and Xaden’s dynamic—particularly their constant declarations of undying devotion and passionate love scenes. While their bond is undeniably strong, the frequent reiterations of “I’d burn the world for them” started to feel overdone. Their relationship is powerful, but I would have liked to see more depth in their interactions beyond physical intimacy.

That said, this book delivers on action, intrigue, and surprises. The lore expansion and plot twists were some of my favorite parts, keeping me engaged and eager to see where the story goes next. With plenty of intensity, magic, and suspense, Onyx Storm sets up an exciting path forward for the next installment.

Pairs well with a dark chocolate chai.
